1/9 Concacaf Gold Cup 2009
Update: After the tremendous performance in the Confederations Cup by the United States we can look forward to a few more classic games from the North and Central American Championship aka the Gold Cup.
The Gold Cup starts July 3rd and the Final will be played on July 28th. Its the 20th edition of the Concacaf Championship, the 10th in its current format as the Gold Cup.
Mexico lead the way with 7 titles and are followed by the United States with 4 but the U.S. has taken 3 out of the last 4 tournaments. Watch out for a strong Costa Rican team that lead the way in World Cup qualifiying and have not won a Concacaf Title since 1989. |

2/9 Copa Libertadores
Update:The Copa Libertadores is down to the semi-final stage, Gremio take on Cruzeiro in the all Brazilian semi while Nacional of Uruguay will play Independiete of Argentina.
The Copa Libertadores, the Cup of the Liberators, is one of the great club competitions in World Football. It is a who's who of the greats of South American Football.
The first Copa was played in 1960 and was won by Penarol of Uruguay who repeated the feat the following year. Santos, with a certain Pele, took the next 2 titles before a period of Argentinean dominance took place. Teams from the "Land of Silver" won 12 out of the next 15 finals, including 3 in a row by Estudiantes La Plata and an amazing 4 straight titles by Independiente.
Since 2004 three teams from the Mexican InterLiga have been invited to compete each year. Current champions are LDU Quito, the first team from Ecuador to win the trophy, beating Fluminense of Rio de Janeiro in a pulsating two leg final which ended in a 5-5 tie and resulted in a penalty shoot-out where LDU goalkeeper José Francisco Cevallos became a national hero after he saved 3 of Fluminense's spot kicks |

6/9 FC Barcelona
"Més que un club"
Congratulations to FC Barcelona on their deserved victory over Manchester United in Rome's Stadio Olimpico to win the 2009 UEFA Champions League Final thus becoming Spain's first "Tri-Campions"- something that not even the mighty Real Madrid achieved.
There have been many hero's for Barca throughout the season but Joan Laporta's brave appointment of former captain and B team coach Pep Guardiola seems to have been the spark that lit the fire.
With essentially the same team as last season (minus a former World Player of the Year) Guardiola instilled a team spirit and a footballing direction who's results speak for themselves. At 38 and his first season as a manager he has achieved what only a few have a accomplished in a lifetime.
