At half-time in this Copa América semi-final it seemed as if La Albirroja could replicate their Group Stage comeback against Argentina but four more goals from La Albiceleste together with a world-class performance from Lionel Messi sealed their place in the Final against host nation Chile.
Argentina made a strong start to the game with a goal in the 15th minute when Marcos Rojo got on the end of a Messi free kick and redirected it into the net from 12 yards out. Their lead was doubled less than a quarter of an hour later when Pastore fired a low drive past Villar, Messi again providing the assist.
Things seemed to be heading for disaster for Paraguay as they lost González and Santa Cruz but the addition of Lucas Barrios gave them renewed hope when he scored with just minutes remaining in the first half.
Instead of capitulating, like in their Group Stage encounter, Argentina instead responded superbly, Di Maria scoring twice within eight minutes of the restart.
Agüero made it 5-1 in the 80th minute and Higuaín added a sixth three minutes later confirming Argentina’s place in Saturday’s Final. They must hope that they can repeat this performance against the hosts and end a trophy drought that has lasted since their win in the 1993 Copa América.
Meanwhile Paraguay, who reached the Final in 2011 will face Perú for bragging rights in the Third-Place Game on Friday night.
We’ll have both games on the Big Screens and en Español as always!
